In Chinese Medicine, raw and cold natured foods are often not sufficiently digested, the body in order to extract nutrients must go through extra work to warm, and then break down tough membranes of food cells. The result is, depending on constitutional makeup, state of the body and the season, the body cannot absorb half the nutrition that is put in. In addition the regular eating of these foods weakens the digestive system, leading to fatigue, weakening of the bodies immune system and digestive upset something we in TCM call middle Jiao dampness which can also lead to weight gain. By cooking foods properly we are pre-digesting, and allowing for maximum absorbency. When your body is not getting proper nutrition it will be hungry, even after lets say a giant salad.
I have found in many patients that the right ideas of nutrition are often practiced like in the case of my hiker patient. Minor changes and education of TCM concepts can go a long way to bringing the body to optimal health.
