RSD, CRPS, SAPHO, now what? CIDP...
A volleyball buddy of mine Tai learned that I am an acupuncturist yesterday when we played at Stanford. He asked me for an advice about his friend who is a 65 year-old gentleman named Bill. Tai was very sad that Bill developed a rare condition that was very crippling for the last few months. He has been suffering a lot of pain and numbness in his lower extremities and is currently staying at ICU of Stanford. Western doctors had no clues but the fact that his "white blood cells are attacking his nerves". They suspected it was a viral infection which caused CIDP. Tai was so eager to help his friend that he got me on the phone right away with Bill. I was just too tired to figure out what CIDP stands for. However, from the symptoms he described I guessed his condition is similar to Guillain-Barré syndrome. As soon as I got home, I found out CIDP stands for Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneurophy which is closely related to Guillain-Barré syndrome. I told Bill I could help him as I have successfully treated many difficult pain conditions such as RSD/CRPS, SAPHO, breakthrough pain, neuopathic pain, peripheral neuropathy, etc. But Bill doubted if acupuncture can stop his "white blood cells from attacking his nerves". Although I grew a little inpatient as he repeatedly mentioned the negative facts, I still told him to contact me after all failed in his pain management. The pearls of the day are
1. if there is no clue to a disease in western medicine, then it is more likely that a NEW jargon will be invented...
2. if it is impossible to figure out the cause of a condition, then it is time to find some solutions to the consequence...
3. if mainstream does not work for a condition, then it is time to try what's so called "alternative or complementary" medicine...
As a medical practitioner, never say it's impossible or there is no hope! Medicine should not respect the jargons, but the real patients!
