Sports Medicine

What is TCM Sports Medicine?

TCM sports medicine focuses on both treating and preventing injuries which frequently occur during sports activities. It treats sports injuries by utilizing channel and zangfu/organ theories of Chinese medicine. It is noninvasive and drug free. In many cases it can help patients avoid surgeries or the need for long-term medication.

Another focus of TCM sports medicine is patient education. We teach our patients how to properly prepare for their sport and how to modify their diet so that patients can also extend their sports career.

What conditions can TCM Sports Medicine treat?

With TCM sports medicine we treat injuries related to sports such as sprains, strains, pain, stiffness and many other conditions. However, TCM sports medicine can also treat illnesses and conditions which prevent people from playing sports and other physical activities.

What procedures are used in TCM Sports Medicine?

Acupuncture is the major technique of healing used. Ice pack and hot pack therapies are also used when appropriate. Herbs are recommended, either orally or topically, to speed up the healing process. In some cases, a couple of needles are retained subcutaneously for a few hours to provide substantial pain relief and healing, thus enabling patients to engage in normal social activities or an important competition.

How do we ensure your health and safety?

Prior to any treatments, patients with sports injuries will need a full examination which will aid the practitioner in making a diagnosis. Sometimes X-rays will be recommended to exclude fractures and other complications. Patients are also encouraged to consult their own specialist concerning their injuries to foster a team of healing specialists. Upon request, our staff physician specializing in sports injuries will be available for consultation. Also part of the healing team are four to six assistants who will also enhance adequate patient safety and encourage a healing environment.
