Glaucoma usually occurs when pressure in your eye increases. This can happen when eye fluid isn't circulating normally in the front part of the eye. Normally, this fluid, called aqueous humor, flows out of the eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel becomes blocked, fluid builds up, causing glaucoma. The direct cause of this blockage is unknown, but doctors do know that it can be inherited, meaning it is passed from parents to children. Less common causes of glaucoma include a blunt or chemical injury to the eye, severe eye infection, blockage of blood vessels in the eye, inflammatory conditions of the eye, and occasionally eye surgery to correct another condition. Glaucoma usually occurs in both eyes, but it may involve each eye to a different extent. Reports also indicated some of the medications for allergy may also contribute to the increase of the intraocular pressure (IOP). http://www.webmd.com/eye-health/glaucoma-eyes#1 Case study: Jane who is a seventy-three year old tennis enthusiast came in 6 months ago for an injury to her right eye caused by her racket. She was hoping to use acupuncture to help her bruise go away more quickly. To her pleasant surprise, the bruise went away the next day after acupuncture. Then she came back the following week and asked if acupuncture could help lower her IOP which was found high (28, 26) by her eye physician. Based upon my experience, I laid out a treatment plan as follows. Acupuncture once a week for the first four weeks, once every other week two months and once a month for three more months. Today Jane told me her recent eye exam surprised her doctor by an IOP of 21 in both eyes. She is just one of the few who are under acupuncture care for glaucoma at our clinic. Frank He, L. Ac, QME

Hi Frank,
Thanks so much for helping Meika heal his injury! He won the Early Bird Invitational this week-end beating the Bellarmine record for a sophomore with a time 15:52 for a 3 mile XC race, and becoming the all around fastest runner of the school this year. This was an important race for him with over 500 athletes in each heap and 72 schools of North California represented. We couldn't have done it without you! We now look forward to seeing what he can do at Stanford in 2 weeks! Best, Marie-Nathalie p.s. And I'll probably call to schedule a time with you tomorrow morning so you can help me be at my best for my upcoming trip! We're so lucky to know you. To carpenters, the job is all about hammer and nails. When dealing with joint problems, the surgeons tend to deal with chisels, knives, screws, and staples! As acupuncture has proved to be a very safe and effective healing method for acute and chronic injuries such as muscle sprains, ligamental tears, and even bone fractures. Now my patients are very happy and grateful that acupuncture can help with so many acute and chronic injuries which could have easily and readily been operated by surgeons. When you have to deal with injuries and pains in joints next time, please keep in mind that acupuncture might be the most effective yet the least invasive approach when compared to surgeries. Injuries can result in joint degeneration over time in most cases. However, surgeries are more likely to bring on the arthritis even faster. So if you have to face a joint fusion or replacement, you may want to give acupuncture a chance as it may relieve a lot of pain, improve quality of life while slowing down the progression, and postponing the replacement. Therefore, there is always room and time for needles before knives! Frank He, L. Ac., QME, DAOM |
