A 77 year old female patient presented with severe knee pain and lower extremity edema on 8/12/15. She denied any injury and other causes such as arthropathy. Her breaths seemed a bit short. Knowing she is hypertensive, I requested for a review on her medications. Although acupuncture may help reduce her edema quickly, I'd like to know the REAL solution to the problem. After going through her medications, I felt her blood pressure meds might be the cause based upon my knowledge and experience. While administering acupuncture and herbs, I suggested she consult her cardiologist as what medicine might cause the edema.
My patient came back today with a big smile on her face as her doctor stopped one of the blood pressure meds and cut one half of the other. The cardiologist did ask her a few times who prompted her for the visit and she cleverly said it was another doctor in the same building that suggested her to discuss the issue with a cardiologist. I wish the day would come soon when doctors and acupuncturists talk to each other as often as needed, especially when mutual patients' health is involved.
